Overview

The high volume of orders in both the entertainment and fictional sectors has led to a significant shortage of skilled workers in professions around the film set.

To meet this increased demand, the Erich Pommer Institute, in collaboration with the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, offers the Regieassistenz Certificate Course (Assistant Director, DE).

This event is recognised as an educational event in accordance with § 10 Abs. 1 Satz 3 of the Berlin Educational Leave Act.

Quality management

This course has been reviewed and certified as part of the quality assurance of the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. The internal auditing is based on the principles of ISO 9001 (though it does not correspond 1:1). It outlines the course content, qualifications and objectives, which are aligned with the university standards according to the quality management of the Film University.

The certification enables participants to receive a total of12 ECTSto receive the successfully completed further training (the requirement for this is 80% attendance in the course). The decision on the recognition is at the discretion of the respective university.

Target group and access requirements


There is no traditional training opportunity for assistant directors/AD in Germany. The certificate course is aimed at production managers, script supervisors, freelancers, as well as career changers and returners in the field of assistant directing who want to qualify for their further career path, and companies that want to train and promote talents in the field of assistant directing.

Requirements:

  • at least 2 years of experience in media professions or on set (not necessarily continuous) in relevant areas (e.g. production management, script supervision, set management, assistant directing/AD, directing internship)
  • Basic knowledge of the film production process

  • Basic knowledge of cinematic design tools, their applications and the respective workload

  • Basic knowledge of the collective agreement

  • Basic knowledge of common shooting schedule programmes (Fuzzlecheck or Movie Magic) or the willingness to familiarise oneself with them during the course

After over 12 years of set experience as Script Continuity and Assistant Director in various formats (Film, Series, Show, Advertising), Annette Kärcher now works as Training Coordinator at UFA Serial Drama in Cologne and as a professional mentor for the trainees of the UFA Academy. Annette Kärcher takes great pleasure in sharing her expertise with colleagues, trainees, and career changers, exchanging new ideas and perspectives with them, and inspiring them for work as Script Continuity and/or Assistant Director.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, raised in San Francisco and Northern California in the mid-sixties and seventies. In his youth, Scott was nearly annually on the road through a wash of Northern Californian counter-cultures. After two decades of roaming, he pursued film production and screenwriting at UCLA Film School. He and two of his fellow UCLA students, Allison Anders and Dean Lent, engaged by the immediacy and challenges of Road Movies, were invited to work as PAs on Wim Wenders' “Paris Texas”. After film school, Scott moved to Paris, and then to Berlin to work on “Wings of Desire”. He worked for over a decade with Wenders, and since then on 50+ international co-productions, German Art House films, commercials and music promos. He has worked as a 1st AD with Terrence Malick, The Wachowskis, Anton Corbijn, Fatih Akin, Gareth Edwards, Quentin Tarantino, Marjane Satrapi, Julie Delpy and many others.

Studied lawyer and has been working in senior positions in the HR sector (Berlin, NRW, Dresden, Nuremberg) for 15 years, including 6 years in HR support in the media & film & television sector (Hamburg, Berlin). Also partially involved in management for the People area. Additionally working as a coach (www.umbrella-coaching.de) and as a volunteer judge at the Nuremberg Labour Court.

Refund through the tax return at the tax office

You can claim the costs for professional development in your tax return as business expenses for the self-employed or as work-related expenses for employees.

Depending on how high your personal income and thus your personal tax rate are, the tax office indirectly contributes to the costs of the course through tax reduction of up to 50%. Deductible are, among other things, participation fees or travel costs. For further questions, please contact your local tax office.
