Why is EPI actually called the Erich Pommer Institut
The institute is named after Erich Pommer – one of the most significant producers of the early 20th century. We do not manage his estate, but rather orient ourselves to his spirit and attitude: a passion for innovation, support for young talent, and a willingness to embrace the new.
His productions – includingThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari(1920),Metropolis(1927) andThe Blue Angel(1930) – remain milestones in film history to this day. In addition to his keen interest in technical and content innovation, Erich Pommer was consistently committed to supporting young filmmakers as well as the training and education of his staff.
As early as the 1920s, he brought organisational and technical innovations from the USA to Germany. In 1933, he emigrated abroad with his family and worked with Fritz Lang in France, with Alfred Hitchcock in England, and later in Hollywood. In 1946, he returned to Germany and supported the reconstruction of the German film industry as a film officer for the US Army.
